Shopping online is something we've all become much more comfortable with, but we're also increasingly aware of problems with multinational companies, and how important it is for our money to support local businesses. So how can you easily browse online, and know that you're shopping and spending locally? On large and trusted sites like Etsy it is possible to set filters, asking to only see makers based in a certain location, but even if you buy from a maker based in the same city as you, using that website means a chunk of money goes to a big business based elsewhere. If you want to be cunning, you can use sites like Etsy or Folksy to discover great makers, and then search for their own independant websites, but being honest, it can be a faff, and not all independant buinesses (myself included) have convenient seperate online shops. Shop Notttingham is a new website aiming to mix the convenience of online shopping, with true local support, as it's gathering some of the best from local indie retailers, creators and makers, while being run in Nottingham itself. It's not a radical concept, as Nottingham already has great indie retailers with a fabulous online presence, but Shop Nottingham's plan is to provide you with a variety of purely local makers (from the city centre all the way to the county's boundaries, and maybe a tad further too) offering quite the range of both goods and services! Ben Rawson, the power behind Shop Notttingham, hopes that soon folks browsing the shop will not only be able to buy gifts and treats, or request made to order items, but also discover and book workshops run by local makers, and book sessions with local creative businesses. The goal is not simply an online shop for physical items, but a place for you to find out about and get involved with Nottingham's independant scene.
Ben's experiences as both a business consultant, and outspoken champion of cultural and creative industries, mean I know he's well placed to see this concept through, and I suspect it will only benefit those involved. This is after all the chap who, when a pop up shop suddenly fell through, didn't throw his hands in the air, but instead offered to show my items to Nottingham's Tourist Information Centre, and boom, I had a new retailer! Shopping on Shop Nottingham will get you fabulous items from locally based businesses, and in the background, support a business which cares about helping that local vibe grow even stronger. That's a pretty good way for your purchases to do good twice over.

This sounds great! Do the sellers only sell locally, or if we live outside Nottingham can we buy things too?

Hi Pip! You don't have to be in Nottingham! At present I'm offering UK wide shipping on Shop Nottingham (worldwide on Etsy) and other sellers on there are shipping to other countries too.
