You'll probably know, if you've seen any of my social media or newsletters, that my Quality Control team is run by Ceinwyn, a rather strong-minded black cat. Hers is the typical tale of a black cat, as her pregnant black cat mother was a rescued stray, and after being born the grey tabby kittens all got homes first, because people just don't want black cats. National Black Cat day is held annually on October 27th, and aims to show everyone why they are just as worthy of love as any other cat! Even if you can't adopt, you can help charities who do find homes for these loving creatures: https://www.cats.org.uk/support-us/events/black-cats The Cats Protection League are running a challenge this year, to see how many people are on #TeamBlackCat or #TeamBlackAndWhiteCat, and well, I like both (Shade was a previous member of my Studio, and Londo too, but honestly he was rather lazy) but right now I am #TeamBlackCat for sure. 20% off, and £1 goes to the Cats Protection!I've got a few different Black Cat designs in my store at the moment, all with 20% off until the end of October, AND any of those items purchased on October 26th and 27th will see £1 donated to Cats Protection. Show you're on #TeamBlackCat, or get a Christmas gift ready for someone who loves their own midnight monster.

Am I wearing enough jewellery in this photo?! Many of our accessories have personal meanings, from cuff-links worn at a wedding, to cheap earrings given by a friend. You probably own at least one thing, however infrequently worn, which you cherish for more than just the material worth. So what if you're pretending to be someone else? Your jewellery may be important to you, or to the person you're pretending to be, or to both of "you". Confused? Let's look at how strangely vital jewellery can become in live role play. Imagine a group of actors taking part in improvised theatre, with no audience, just performing and interacting for their own enjoyment of the process, the delight in escapism, the interest in exploring other mindsets and attitudes. That's the crux of live role play (LRP) I've wanted to talk about this for a while, and recently a photo made me realise it's time to dive in. "It will always be treasured!" When did you last do something new, just for the joy of it? I recently realised that there's a very rewarding kind of release in trying something new "just because", and it's simpler to achieve than it sounds. At the end of the September I spent a splendid week on the Dorset coast, and I took two simple projects. One was a small cheap weaving loom, which was purchased because "That looks like something different to try". The second project was hand hemming a silk scarf, which built on my existing sewing skills to create an accessory for a specific outfit.
In the evenings we listened to the audiobook of J. Michael Straczynski's autobiography, Becoming Superman. Towards the end he talks about doing what gives you joy in life, and I recognised that was the feeling I'd steeped myself in with my two projects. A deep, quiet delight, with occasional highlights of "nailed it!" when I got a tricky bit right, or a patient repetitive bit completed. |
