Shopping online is something we've all become much more comfortable with, but we're also increasingly aware of problems with multinational companies, and how important it is for our money to support local businesses. So how can you easily browse online, and know that you're shopping and spending locally?

The message to shop small and support independent businesses is louder than ever these days, but when it comes to gifts, it can sometimes feel simpler to go " I'll just order them that thing from online" or grab an easy go-to from the gift section of a big retail chain. You find an amazing range of (sometimes fantastically specific) gift options by shopping small, at a range of prices, and you can often even get into direct contact with the creator, potentially asking for exactly what your recipient will love. Here are six great gifts ideas which support small and independent business - so grab a brew, have a quick think, then hit up the internet, markets and lovely local bricks and mortar stores. 1. Go for their hobbies, in unexpected ways!Everyone has things they love, and sometimes that means easy gift go-tos. Get the gardener another plant-your-own kit... But have a look away from the chain stores, and you'll find the tangential ideas, which may well delight them as a change from getting the same kind of thing over and over. How about some really good scrubby and moisturing soap for your the hands of your garden loving recipient?
Try somewhere like Etsy, and search for terms like gardener gift, or West Ham gift, or even Lily Savage gift! However niche you think their interest is, someone will make something for it. No New Year resolutions (because they are easily broken by dint of being made mainly from duty) but how about a simple challenge for 2017? One that champions independent makers and retailers? And lasts all year?... Each Friday through 2017 I’ll be sharing a picture on social media shouting about something I have worn, used or consumed that week, which has been made by an indie designer maker, or bought from an indie retailer. This idea was sparked by a fab lady called Sharon. Her personal #frockonfriday challenge has seen Sharon showcase a fabulous series of dresses, often photographed in entertaining ways, and I pondered how I might similarly challenge myself in a fun way. Tidying up my array of earrings, I realised how much jewellery I own is from wonderful independent designers, and decided to broaden my options to include some of the great food, drink and artists I love. I'll make sure each week I wear, use, buy, eat, drink in a way that supports at least one independent - then share the best on Friday! Join in #loveindiefriday2017Interested? You can join in too! Either join me on a weekly Friday update challenge, or just do one Friday a month, or just big up an independent you've supported on whichever Friday you fancy. Use #loveindiefriday2017 on Twitter and Instagram, and hopefully you'll find some new indie loves from what I post. See you on Friday!
