There are many ways to wear a hidden message in jewellery, from writing inside a ring or locket, through to coded messages like beads arranged in Morse code patterns. But something truly beautiful, and very interesting to play with, is using grapheme-colour synesthesia. You don't know what synesthesia is? It's where someone experiences strong secondary sensations or associations in response to a stimulus. It might be seeing colours when reading numbers, or having a taste in their mouth when hearing a certain word. Precisely what they experience varies from person to person . How does that make for a hidden message though? A Synesthesia ProjectArtist and designer Bernadette Sheridan has grapheme-colour synesthesia, which she describes as "...my brain “sees” letters and numbers as very specific colours." Bernadette has created a brilliant online tool where you can enter your name, and it generates an image showing how she "sees" your name in colour. Naturally I tried my name(s) - My given name is Lisa, but I often go by Lise as well. Then a few names of friends, my other half, the cats... and finally Perfidious. Secret name necklaceI was utterly sold on the colours of Perfidious as seen by Bernadette. Through her online store she sells bright and bold prints (I'm thinking about some as future presents for people) but I fancied a little creative challenge for myself. Could I make a necklace in the right colours, using only beads I already had? Although my yellow bead is rather long (so it would be Peeeeeeerfidious?!) I really like how it breaks up the line of beads, and am very happy to find that burst of colour a home at last. Disaster struck and I dropped the wire with the beads threaded on. A brief swear, all picked up, threaded, attached to chain, and finally photographed! Except, can you spot the mistake above? I missed the brown bead... so had to find it, unwire the necklace and add it back on. My enthusiasm got the better of me. The end result though I adore as a piece of very contemporary feeling jewellery, and my own openly worn hidden message, with a fascinating tale behind it. Try it yourself - what's your name in colour?

oh I love this! And her prints look like a great "neutral" nursery decor idea, they'd be a great way to base a colour scheme (I wonder if my other half would agr!) thanks for sharing.

Hi Jenni, I'm sure that Bernadette (and me too!) would love to know if you use her work as inspiration for a colour scheme. It'd be a great way to avoid assumptions and built in bias, and go with something different.
