By now, if you know my social media you know Ceinwyn the beautiful black blob. As my black cat accessory range has just been expanded in time for Halloween, it's a prime time to load up with fab feline facts about these little shadows, so you can drop them into conversation as spooky season gets underway! I've got a list of eight facts about black cats, because it started off as lucky seven, but these mini panthers are always worth a little extra. . If you feel you've met a lot of black cats, they're not stalking you! (unless you've done something to deserve a cat curse...) The genes responsible for creating black fur are dominant, making black a common coat colour. If one parent is black, chances are very high the kittens will be too. 2. In Scotland, a black cat appearing on your doorstep is seen as a sign of prosperity. 3. If you hear a black cat sneeze in Italy, you’re supposedly in for a streak of good luck. And possibly going "Eeww, thanks." while wiping cat snot off your face. 4. There's a popular belief that black cats are less likely to be adopted, but the ASPCA checked through data, and it turns out to not be true. Because there as so many black cats, thanks to their dominant genes, it skews the data, so it looks like more of them end up in shelters when compared to other coat colours. They still have some bad superstitions around them though, so adopting one always helps! 5. What do Germans think about black cats? You need to pay attention to directions! If a black cat crosses your path from right to left, that's bad luck. But, left to right is good luck. 6. That sound complicated? Try being a pirate. They believed a black cat walking toward you was bad luck, one walking away from you was good luck, and if a cat boarded your ship and then jumped off, the cat knew something you didn't... which is that the ship was going to sink! 7. The black fur gene comes in three variants (solid black, brown and cinnamon) and mixes with other fur genes to create surprising results! A black cat which also has the tabby stripe gene can become rusty brown with the stripes showing through, if it spends a lot of time sunbathing, as the sun makes the eumelanin pigment in its fur break down. Ceinwyn has this, so we've nicknamed her Ninja Tabby. 8. In the south of France there's local superstition about spirits called "matagot" or "mandagot", which often take the shape of black cats. Feeding and treating a black cat well will bring prosperity to the owner, but that does mean letting them eat the first bite of food at each meal. Sorry, Ceinwyn, but no!
