If you've ever said to a person running their own small creative business "Oh how lovely, you get to make things all day!" you might be about to think again. While creating a to-do list, I realised there's a huge list of skills in a one-person business, and it's worth sharing to perhaps debunk a few myths. March means Instagram is busy with Joanne Hawker's fantastic March Meet the Maker, which provides prompts for creatives to talk about what they really do, so it's often a month of honesty for a lot of makers. That's part of what spurred me to create this list of just what jobs I could think of in a flow of consciousness, and look at a couple of misconceptions

Whomever you're thinking of giving a gift to for Galentine or Valentine's Day, it doesn't have to be the usual roses and chocolates. Here are my top six suggestions, each special in their own way, and some gift guide ideas of where you can source them from! I'd feel so valued if I got 1 and 3, how about you? Yes, my tongue is well and honestly in my cheek a bit, but also, uh, well there's a bird skull by my back door, and the rafters of my garage are full of drying things from the garden, so #skullsandtwigsforlife?
What about those pebbles, twigs and bones?Well if you can't find your own (or aren't able to go on a walk together so you can stop at nice pebbles to admire, and point out strange twigs in their natural habitat) here are some ideas.
At the end of the day, if you want to do Valentine's Day, the best thing to give is whatever shows your loved ones how much you understand and value them - which means the "perfect" gift could be a tea cosy, or the traditional massive bunch of red roses.
The perfect gift for me, hmm, is there a way to make a cookie shaped like a skull? Do share in the comments if you know great makers and small businesses who could be equally at home alongside this list! Instagram has swapped the trend of sharing your top 9 posts which achieved the most engagement, for something on stories called Instagram Playback. I say, there's still value in choosing YOUR OWN top moments from the previous year, taking a little time to think about what made you contented, joyful, appreciative, or those experiences you've learned from. 2021 has had a fair bit of stress in it, but I've been fortunate in being able to find or create rainbows in those clouds. These pictures for me represent learning new hands on skills and crafting just because I can, allowing myself to take time off and do the spur of the moment fun thing, learning new skills to try and expand my business, being trusted (and trusting myself) to take on complex or highly personal commissions, embracing what gives me joy and not fearing it being seen as silly, valuing time with family, spending precious time with my husband, taking risks rather than overcalculating and doing myself down. (I've previously picked and illustrated my own, personal top 9 have a look at that blog post here) What would be one of your own top nine moments from 2021?
