The Two Birds Gallery started off life as The Buzz Gallery, a clever name as it was situated above the splendid Apiary Cafe and Bar (all those ciders, and the gorgeous decor!) Moving and developing in February 2015 took the gallery across the road to a lighter, larger and better situated shop. Since opening, their colourful frontage, cheerful flowers and engaging window displays have been a boon to the street. A better location also means workshops and in house services such as fixing up your struggling sewing disasters. I'm yet to be free at the same time as a workshop, but am keeping a keen eye out for their next "make your own knickers" sewing workshop! For those who want to give something new a try, pick up one of their boxed kits for to make yourself a project at home. Unlike some shops of this ilk, The Two Birds gallery is not a haven of twee - there's a wide range of design from the bold and bright, to the adorable, and everything in between. Yes, you will find the odd bit of countrysidey and cottage chicy giftware, but this is of great quality, and slap bang next to the entertainingly slightly offensive, the contemporary, and the retro. As the "gallery" part of the name suggests, The Two Birds Gallery devotes a lot of wall space to regularly changing art displays, encompassing styles and subjects just as broad as the stock in the rest of the shop. There's almost always something new to discover. Stick around on the blog and you'll see me bang on about a few places around Castle Donington, as by crikey, it may feel a bit like an episode of Midsomer Murder could be set here, but since I've seen my home village of Poynton gain a Costa coffee and a Waitrose, I'll take the independent pride and quirky charm of Donington any day! If you have a local independent shop you love, or any tips for visiting Castle Donington (nip down the Spital to pick free blackberries right now!) let people know in the comments.
