You may not think of yourself as an "accessories" person, with jewellery and other adornments not a part of your day to day. There's one thing which may surprise you though, being wearable in so many different ways, and in some cases very functional - The Stick Pin! A long pin with a lump at the end has been a piece of human clothing since we started trying to get two animal skins to stay put, starting with bone and antler, and eventually moving to metal, (with those of a higher class taking the chance to show off, of course, with decoration) As buttons, toggles, lacing and comparatively recently the zip appeared, the pin has been relegated, but oh, it can still be useful, and a chance to show off too! Stick it on your jumperThe simplest thing you can do with a stick pin is just pin it on your jumper, fleece, cardigan, exactly as you might do a badge or lapel pin. They are especially useful if you have an open front kint you want to close up, just overlap the edges and pin through. The same goes with loose necked knitwear, when you want a little extra warmth from your cowel neck. Suits youI'm often in a waistcoat or a loose blazer, great with a pair of jeans or on top of a dress when the weather can't quite decide what is going on. Adding a stick pin puts a pop of colour and personality into what can otherwise be a very straight look, and offers gents another way to express themselves (ladies have much more leeway still in jewellery and accessories) as well as potentially keeping their tie out of their dinner. Accessorise your accessoriesYou can pretty much pin a stick pin anywhere, so on a laptop bag, rucksack, evening clutch, stamp a bit of your taste onto what may otherwise be just another bag. Hats are also a great place to share your style, and if you have longer hair, a stick pin can cleverly be used to help hold you hat on, pinned through your hair. It takes a little trial and error, and works best if your hair is fastened back or up in some way, but hat pins genuinely keep hats on! A little formalityBeyond the everyday suit (unless, you admirable soul, you dress to impress at a level above every day) more formal occasions see the stick pin come in useful once again. Helping to keep cravats tidy, and holding buttonholes in place. Of course, they can also be worn on the lapel in place of a floral buttonhole. Wrap it upOne of my favourite stick pin uses is with scarves, as a selection of different scarves is a valuable resource against the changeable British weather. For a chunky knit, no need to knot it and choke yourself, simply cross over and pin to keep warm. Something lighter can be folded and pinned, for warmth and style without a lumpy end result. A great daily look is a colourful silk or cotton scarf over a jersey top, pinned to stop it slipping, and for summer, a casual pashmina or shawl over the shoulders, held with a pin, means no continual messing as it tries to slide down your arms.

A stick pin is a versatile accessory that offers various styling possibilities. Wear it on a blazer lapel, at the collar, on a hat, or as a scarf pin. Transform it into a hair accessory, a brooch, or even a tie pin. Its adaptability makes it a timeless and chic addition to any ensemble.
