If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, you'll have seen the occasional cat picture, as we have three furry helpers in our household. As it's now a year since they joined us from the RSPCA, I thought they should have proper introductions to you!
It may not sound like much, but to a small business, any recognition makes you beam. I try to mention and support other small and/or local businesses as I go about my thing, because what goes around comes around, and they also deserve the love.
And it seems a little blob of karma just landed on my doorstep :)
Two commissions just completed last night (hence the dark photos!) with polymer clay unicorns on top of keepsake boxes. One is off to Wales, the other Canada, but both recipients wanted purple. The horns and off white curls of hair glow in the dark, and the white bodies have a light shimmer, which makes them very magical unicorns as far as small people are concerned!
I love making these, each one is unique, with the tail, posing, hair, bead details, so they all have their own character. Working to commission is fun too, knowing that someone will get a gift which has been thought about, and tailored just for their tastes.
Unlike my last batch of unicorns, nothing was overcooked in the oven....
There's been a big upsurge in shopping to support local , independent and smaller businesses as people lash out against large companies, start to appreciate the local economic benefits to changing habits, and want more personal or traditional experiences. I've touched on it here.
Before Christmas is a good time to branch out, as you're looking for the unique, the special, the bespoke. And the high street gets a bit anger inducing to shop in! So even if only for a couple of items, here are your easy ways to shop small, indie and local! Read more, for how to...
It was a friend's 18th birthday yesterday (blimey, that age seems both a long time ago and like only yesterday...) so I wanted to give her something special.
This key to 18 piece riffs off the traditional 16/18/21 key idea, but with a vibe better suited to this modern young lady!
The coloured wax brass rubbings in the background are from Nottingham Castle, where she currently works part time, and the stars are glow in the dark to guide her and help her aim high. Or, you know, to remind her it's fine to just stop and stare at the stars, and forget about everything else.
If you'd like something special for a birthday or other event, I'm happy to help! Either working to your specifications, or conjuring something wholly unique for you.
